US football fans were left in the dark as screens went blank during the crucial encounter, sparking consternation among those who’d paid for the service.

In an emailed apology a YouTube representative wrote: “We’re really sorry for the recent YouTube TV outage during the Fifa World Cup semi-final. To help make this right, we’d like to give you a week of free service.”

The offer amounts to a maximum $10 saving for customers on the most expensive $40 per month pricing plan.

YouTube TV was down for a full hour before its engineers were able to resume service.

Earlier this year YouTube broadened its ad products to enable adverts to be delivered specifically to its TV viewers.
