People on the move: Hires and departures at Vice, Samsung, John Lewis and more

This week has seen another wave of appointments and departures at brands, media owners and agencies. The Drum has rounded up the key hires below.

Vice

Global youth media company Vice UK has appointed the Guardian’s live features editor Rebecca Nicholson as editor-in-chief on the same day as recruiting her colleague Jenny Stevens, commissioning editor for culture, as managing editor.

As well as bringing in fresh blood the management shake-up also places women in a position of dominance at the media outlet complementing further changes which saw Elektra Kotsoni elevated to European editorial director.

Samsung

Samsung’s chief marketing officer has joined the board of directors of data relationship company Personal BlackBox. Mathieu, who recently joined Samsung’s US mobile division as chief marketing officer, takes nearly two decades of brand strategy and corporate responsibility to the PBB team just in time for its launch this fall.

John Lewis

John Lewis has scrapped its marketing director role and become the latest in a line of brands to have created the 'customer director' as it tries to get a handle on the end-to-end consumer experience.

Marketing director, Craig Inglis - who has served at John Lewis for the past seven years – will take on the role with an expanded remit to cover the whole customer experience alongside his previous marketing and customer insight duties.

Time Inc.

Time Inc. has appointed Charlie Meredith as transformation director and Sam Finlay as managing director for advertising. Both will take up their roles with immediate effect, reporting to chief executive, Marcus Rich.

Meredith will work to accelerate the development of Time Inc.UK's organic and acquisitive growth initiatives. He has worked across the firm in a number of senior roles including managing director of TV entertainment brands and managing director, advertising.

Marketing Liverpool

Steven Small is to return to Marketing Liverpool as head of tourism after a seven year stint at city rivals Marketing Manchester.

The role will see Small oversee a team of ten tasked with marketing the city internationally for tourism and leisure as well as leading the agencies work at VisitLiverpool.com and Liverpool Convention Bureau.

Small said: "During my time with Marketing Manchester, I have been directly involved in a variety of significant projects and I am truly excited to be able to use this knowledge and experience to support the amazing work Liverpool has undertaken in recent years."

Codewise

Marketing tech firm Codewise has tapped Gavin Stirrat for the newly-created role of managing director, Voluum. He will be responsible for the commercial development of the Voluum platform, as greater functionality is added to the existing suite of tracking tools.

Ogilvy & Mather

Ogilvy & Mather London is understood to have hired BBH's chief operating officer Charlie Rudd to replace Cheryl Giovannoni as its new chief executive.

The Drum has learned that Rudd will take over the running of the agency from Giovannoni who it was announced would leave Ogilvy last month with Annette King, chief executive of Ogilvy & Mather Group UK, taking temporary charge.

Wunderman

Seth Solomons is to make a triumphant return to Wunderman as its North America CEO, resuming an association with the digital and direct marketing agency which saw him serve as account director from 1992 to 2000.

Based in New York Solomons will lead 2,200 North American employees across 43 offices and report directly to CEO Mark Read.

Videology

Videology has tapped Jana Eisenstein for the role of managing director, EMEA. She will be responsible for managing the firm’s growth in the region.

A digital veteran, Eisenstein has a wealth of experience from senior roles in digital technology and marketing at the likes of Capgemini and Microsoft.

Joining Videology in 2010 as director of publisher services, EMEA she was Videology’s first European employee.

AppNexus

AppNexus has announced the appointment of longtime Google executive Doina Harris as vice-president of the Advertiser Technology Group (ATG) in EMEA and SAP veteran Michele Weber as vice-president and head of ATG global marketing.

Harris has held senior-level roles at Google since 2007, including director of sales operations and strategy for Southern and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa. Weber was previously vice-president, growth marketing and communications at SAP; she brings a wealth of experience in enterprise technology marketing.

PubMatic

PubMatic, the marketing automation software company for publishers, has hired Bill Swanson as vice-president for EMEA.

The appointment of Swanson, who has been Country Manager UK at the company since February 2014, will build on the growth and momentum that PubMatic has driven in EMEA over the last four years, expanding from its UK presence to now include Germany, France, Italy and the Nordics.

With more than 15 years commercial digital experience, Swanson’s previous roles include chief commercial officer at Kalooga, managing director at The Independent Digital and commercial manager at News International.

UKOM

UKOM is has announced Ian Dowds as its first chief executive officer

He arrives at UKOM with 25 years of experience in the media marketplace taking a broad perspective from senior management and strategic roles spanning TV, agency, print and digital. With senior and leadership roles at ITV, MindShare, Turner, Specific Media, Trinity Mirror and InMobi.

Branded3

Digital agency Branded3 has announced the appointment of two directors, strengthening its senior management team following the promotion of Tim Grice to chief executive in June.

Head of search Stephen Kenwright will move into the director of search role vacated by Grice, assuming leadership of the agency’s search and content marketing operations from the company’s Leeds base.

Laura Crimmons, previously head of PR and social, will take up the newly created role of communications director and bolster the agency’s senior team in London.

RadiumOne

RadiumOne has hired two senior Mediabrands and Quantcast executives to its newly formed strategic sales division.

Natalie Yorke, who was new business and marketing director at IPG Mediabrands and Laura Roman, who was senior strategist at Quantcast, will lead the new division, reporting directly to UK sales director Craig Tuck.

The newly formed division is designed to work more closely with agencies to better educate advertisers about the benefits provided by programmatic and social sharing in activating genuine customer-centric marketing.

Gravity Road

Bafta-winning creative agency Gravity Road has promoted Max Ward to head of multiplatform.

He will work across the entire Gravity Road portfolio, bringing the discipline of distribution to all creative projects and ensuring success across paid, owned and earned channels.

Cheil

Cheil Worldwide has appointed Paul Hammersley as UK group chief executive officer, with the brief to drive growth through the expansion of its range of specialist agencies in the UK and foster collaboration.

Hammersley has more than 15 years’ experience engineering agency growth strategies. In 1999 he was responsible for successfully spearheading the merger of Lowe and Ammirati Puris Lintas to create Lowe Lintas.
