Singaporeans are more likely to shop end-of-year sales such as Singles’ Day and Black Friday out of boredom than for a good deal.

14% say they will be shopping because the sales provide good value

37%, or an estimated 1.9 million people, will shop the sales for several different reasons including pure boredom, which was the most popular reason given. This is according to Finder.com’s Black Friday Statistics report.

“Over a third of the Singaporean population are planning to shop the end-of-year sales this year, with many doing so to simply stave away boredom, while others are looking to take advantage of the great deals on offer,” said Susannah Binsted, head of public relations for international at Finder.com.

“With people spending more time at home over the past 18 months, it’s not surprising so many people are looking to shop away their boredom. Travel and hospitality took a back seat this year, so people will be looking to have fun with their shopping to make up for lost time.”

She added: “If you’re shopping out of boredom, it’s a good idea to set and stick to a budget so you don’t go overboard. The sales can be a great time to pick up a product for less – but only if it’s something you truly need and not something you’re buying just for the sake of it.”

What did the study find?

  • 16% say pure boredom is why they will be adding to their carts.

  • 14% say they will be shopping because the sales provide good value and the other 7% of shoppers say they will be hitting up the sales but didn’t give a specific reason why.

  • Women are slightly more likely than men to shop the sales overall (38% women v 37% men), while men are more likely to be shopping out of boredom (18% men v 15% women).

  • Singaporeans aged 65 and above are most likely to shop the sales, with 41% of people from this age group saying they’ll be making a purchase. Meanwhile, just 33% of those aged 35-44 say the same.

  • Of the 63% of adults choosing not to shop, 6% say it’s because they think the prices are inflated beforehand, while 5% say it’s because the sales they want aren’t discounted.
