The retailer is pulling out all the stops for its now customary end of year extravaganza by reportedly offering £5m pay check for John’s services which included a four-day spell recording a custom rendition of ‘Your Song’ at London’s Pinewood Studios.

Press reports at the weekend suggest that this will see the famed singer reflect on his own past Christmases from childhood through to the present day in a sentimental pull on the heartstrings of all who watch.

Responding to the rumours a cryptic John Lewis spokesperson would say only: “We are lucky enough to enjoy lots of speculation around our TV ads, much of which is wildly inaccurate, and our one rule is to never comment on any aspect simply because we want to keep the magic.”

The John Lewis Christmas advert has become a festive staple alongside mulled wine and mince pies, but have thus far focused on bringing fictional characters to life such as Mog the Monster, Monty the Penguin and Buster the Boxer.
