JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot partners with Tencent for gaming division

Bad Robot launches gaming division in partnership with Tencent

Bad Robot, the production company run by J.J.Abrams, is partnering with Chinese tech giant Tencent to expand into the gaming industry.

The partnership will draw on Tencent’s expertise in gaming and Bad Robot’s skills in storytelling and “world-building” to create “large and indie-scale projects” for mobile, PC and console.

Bad Robot Games will team traditional game developers with creative directors and Bad Robot’s worldwide network of visual artists, musicians, sound designers and writers.

It will be led by Dave Baronoff, the head of interactive at Bad Robot Productions with Tim Keenan as creative director.

The division is being funded by Tencent with Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment on board as a minority investor. Tencent will own the Asian commercial distribution rights for all of Bad Robots Games’ titles.

Bad Robots Productions is responsible for TV and film franchises including Westworld, Star Trek, Mission Impossible, Star Wars and Cloverfield.

JJ Abrams said in a statement, “I’m a massive games fan, and increasingly envious of the amazing tools developers get to work with, and the worlds they get to play in. Now we are doubling down on our commitment to the space with a unique co-development approach to game making that allows us to focus on what we do best, and hopefully be a meaningful multiplier to our developer partners.”

It is the latest addition to Tencent's enormous gaming empire, which owns the hugely successful titles such as Clash of Clans as well as investments in League of Legends developer Riot Games, social gaming company Glu Mobile, as well as China-based developer Seasun.
