Amazon chief Jeff Bezos has boasted that the number of paying subscribers for premium next day delivery service Prime has now surpassed 100 million for the first time, breaking his traditional coyness when discussing stats and sales figures.

Amazon Prime tops 100m subscribers for the first time

Launched 13 years ago the top-tier service charges customers £7.99 per month for the privilege and is a closely watched segment of Amazon’s sprawling business empire, being seen as a gateway to realizing Bezos’ long-term goal of growing the shopping portal into a broader digital destination.

Prime subscribers also offer higher value to Amazon than more occasional shoppers, spending more time (and money) on ancillary services such as video and music as well as its burgeoning Alexa smart speaker business.

In a letter to shareholders Bezos wrote: “In 2017 Amazon shipped more than five billion items with Prime worldwide, and more new members joined Prime than in any previous year – both worldwide and in the US.

“We expanded Prime to Mexico, Singapore, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg, and introduced Business Prime Shipping in the US and Germany. We keep making Prime shipping faster as well, with Prime Free Same-Day and Prime Free One-Day delivery now in more than 8,000 cities and towns.

“Prime Now is available in more than 50 cities worldwide across nine countries. Prime Day 2017 was our biggest global shopping event ever (until surpassed by Cyber Monday), with more new Prime members joining Prime than any other day in our history.”

Bezos has seen his net worth soar to $100bn on the back of record sales.
