Guardian US editor-in-chief, Katharine Viner, wins staff vote to replace Alan Rusbridger
Katherine Viner, the current editor-in-chief of the Guardian US has won the staff vote to replace current Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger.
Rusbridger announced at the end of last year, that he will step down this summer, after being in his current role for 20 years.
Still, Viner's win doesn’t secure her Rusbridger's position. Rather, it ensures that she will be on the list of candidates being considered for the post.
Winning the approval of 53 per cent of those who voted, Viner beat Janine Gibson, editor-in-chief of theguardian.com; Emily Bell, director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism, and non-executive member of the Scott Trust; and Wolfgang Blau, director of digital strategy at the Guardian.
The Scott Trust, which owns The Guardian, will make the final decision on Rusbridger’s replacement later this month. The final shortlist will comprise a maximum of five candidates.
