Tesco has kicked off an initiative to send kids on virtual school trips using Google’s Connected Classrooms platform as part of its wider Eat Happy project.

The first brand to use the technology in Europe, the Online Field Trips have been created by Tesco working closely with teachers in line with the national curriculum.

They aim to teach kids about the origins of food, by talking directly to food growers and producers globally.

Schools taking part are also able to interact with other classes around the UK during the trip.

Tesco UK managing director, Chris Bush, said: “We know from talking to teachers that cost can be a real barrier to taking their pupils on field trips. We want to help by offering all UK primary schools the chance for pupils to make virtual visits to places they wouldn’t normally be able to go and learn more about the food they eat.

“We hope that what we’re doing will improve the next generation’s relationship with food, and help them go on to lead healthier lives.”

Digital agency Zone oversaw the project, with managing director Jon Davie saying: “Tesco’s ambitions for the Eat Happy Project are huge. Digital platforms like Google’s Connected Classrooms initiative allow us to deliver a unique educational experience to thousands of kids at the same time – something we simply couldn't replicate in the real world.”

The first ‘trip’ took place today, 5 June, with a live interactive 30 minute lesson and Q and A session between UK primary schools and Giuseppe Di Martino, a pasta producer in Naples.
