TikTok latest to jump aboard the ‘Stories’ trend
A steady convergence of social media platforms continues unabated with news that TikTok has become the latest provider to ape Snapchat’s popular ‘Stories’ feature.
TikTok is presenting its own take on the ‘Stories’ feature first presented on Snapchat
This bout of corporate mimicry has seen Snapchat’s killer app first copied by Instagram, and it will now make its debut on the video-sharing site under the name TikTok Stories.
TikTok is trialing functionality that bears more than a passing resemblance to its Snapchat namesake, as selected users who are presented with a new slide-over sidebar can view stories posted by followed accounts for a 24-hour window before automatic deletion.
The familiar premise enables users to post reactions and comments to the time-limited content and actively seek out stories from specific users by tapping on their profile.
Confirming the move to The Verge, TikTok is building its variant around videos, introducing a ‘create’ button to unleash your musings for one day only.
A spokesperson wrote: “We’re always thinking about new ways to bring value to our community and enrich the TikTok experience. Currently we’re experimenting with ways to give creators additional formats to bring their creative ideas to life for the TikTok community.”
It remains to be seen whether TikTok’s Stories experiment will lead to a global release, but given the success Snapchat and Instagram have enjoyed such an outcome almost seems inevitable – were it not for the demise of Twitter’s Fleets last month.
