Snapchat is touring the UK with its candid photography Spectacles – yet reports have emerged that the company is already working on the next generation of the device which will have onboard augmented reality features.

As the company expands beyond its software legacy with the release of specialised hardware, the video recording glasses could be crammed with the latest photography tech come the next new model.

TechCrunch cites sources near the closely guarded project, details of which are sparse. The publication noted that it is “increasingly likely that Spectacles II will ship with augmented reality features built in”.

Supplementing this claim of course is a patent filed by the company, found by Mashable in May, outlining the very same product.

To augmented the user’s field of vision, the Specs would have two layers of glass, one of which can host digital overlays guided by the device’s camera.

It comes after the company earlier this week revealed its ad management tools allowing SMEs to finally submit ads directly to its network.
