Nearly two thirds (64 per cent) of BBC Sport content requests during the Wimbledon men’s final against Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic on Sunday (7 July) came via mobile devices, according to the broadcaster’s latest figures.

The final, which saw Murray become the first British Wimbledon champion since 1936, also drew a “record” number of streaming requests from tablet devices – clocking up a total 1.03m browsers all accessing the site during the final.

Over the last few weeks the broadcaster generated the highest online streaming figures the BBC Sport site has seen since the London 2012 Olympic Games. Tennis was the most popular section of the site, with 15.8m UK browsers accessing it during the Wimbledon Championships.

The BBC also attributed the high online figures to other coverage on the site - namely the British Grand Prix and Glastonbury festival, which was accessed by a total 27.08m UK browsers along with the tennis. This figure peaked at 6.47m UK browsers on Friday 5 July – the time when Murray beat Janowicz in the semi final.

The BBC ran ten live streams of the Wimbledon tournament across PCs, mobiles, tablets and connected TVs, while 10.59m people accessed the content via its Red Button services – up from 7.17m last year.

Over half of viewers accessed the BBC’s online sport coverage on a PC, followed by mobile which accounted for a third of total UK requests, with tablets following with 13 per cent of requests and connected TVs trailing at 0.01 per cent.

The moment Andy Murray won the title became one of the top five most popular videos, generating 174,540 UK requests.

Wimbledon champion Andy Murray also won the Twitter battle against Novak Djokovic, receiving more mentions on the social network than his rival.

Meanwhile brands have also been capitalising on the win, with cordial brand Robinsons among those to run creative off the back of the results.
