‘Turkey comes and goes but chicken’s here to stay’ announces KFC in its Christmas ad – a dramatic, animatronic standoff between the two kings of poultry.

Taking inspiration from Western films of yore, the campaign’s film opens on a snowy mountain plain. A chicken boldly struts through the tundra – across frozen lakes, cragged rocks and under barbed wire – until she rounds the corner to face up with her nemesis: the turkey.

The turkey ruffles its plume and stares down our hero, but it is the chicken that wins the standoff, forcing the turkey to run away. The chicken victoriously rears up flapping as the line read: ‘Turkey comes and goes but chicken’s here to stay’.

KFC hopes to capitalise on the population’s secret distaste of turkey at Christmas with supporting work in press, online and out-of-home. One of posters reads: ‘The trick to enjoying Christmas turkey? Lowering your expectations’.

Monica Pool, marketing director of KFC, said: “We close our restaurants on the 25th allowing turkey to have its moment in the sun. Every other day of the year, you needn't worry, KFC will be there.”

The work was produced by the brand’s creative agency, Mother London. It's been a good year for the partnership: the two won big in Cannes Lions for their handling of the so-called #ChickenCrisis.
