Apple: the world's first trillion-dollar company

The iPhone-maker passed the historic trillion-dollar marker earlier today (2 August) when its shares hit a record high of over $207.

The share price had been on the up since Apple posted better than expected results for its most recent trading quarter, reporting profits of $11.5bn for the three months to June following record sales of over $53bn.

Its nearest competitors to the trillion-title were Amazon, currently worth $883bn, and Google parent company Alphabet, worth $845bn.

A brief history

Founded 42 years ago by the late Steve Jobs, Apple began selling desktop computers, but it was the launch of personal technology, including the iPod in 2001 and then the iPhone in 2007, that propelled its growth.

In the past decade, 18 new versions of the iPhone have been launched and more than 1.2bn of the devices have been sold.

Since the company first listed in 1980, its share price has risen by more than 50,000%.

Last year, it shed light on where it potentially sees its net phase of growth after hiring former Channel 4 executive Jay Hunt to lead its content production as it looked to take on the might of Netflix and Amazon.

Reports last year suggested it would ramp its original content spend, currently around $1bn, to $4.2bn by 2022 in line with significant investments into Apple Music.

Apple in ads

Apple’s advertising has played a major part in its success. According to estimates, it dropped in excess of $118m on TV during the second quarter of 2018 alone (the quarter than led it to hit the $1trn mark), up from 35.8% from the same period in 2017.

It has a decades-long relationship with ad agency TBWA\Media Arts Lab, which has created much of the advertising you can see below.

Here’s a look at some of its most iconic ads over the years.
