Ads We Like: England manager Gareth Southgate’s Pizza Hut advert
England manager Gareth Southgate is proving his credentials at the 2018 World Cup and growing in stature game-by-game as perhaps the country’s favourite boss in years.
Pizza Hut Ad / Pizza Hut
But this Pizza Hut ad from over 20 years ago is a reminder of darker days for Southgate’s career after he missed THAT penalty against Germany in 1996 to deny England a place in the final of the European championships.
And he was visibly devastated by not scoring that evening, which showed how much it affected him.
However, just a few months later this advert appeared featuring Southgate with a paper bag over his head dining alongside fellow England internationals
Stuart Pearce (another player who missed a penalty against Germany) and Chris Waddle. The pair laugh and giggle while emphasising the word ‘miss’ whenever they can at Southgate’s expense.
And the punchline at the end isn’t bad either.
But what does this say about Southgate? When he could have hidden away and consoled himself - however here he’s allowed the country to poke fun at his (and its own) misery and just gotten on with things. And he’s broken England’s penalty hoodoo in the current World Cup tournament as well. So it’s a happy ending of sorts for the man as well.
Top fella and a still funny ad today.
