Walmart is encouraging its US employees to attend college by offering to foot most of the bill.

On Wednesday, the massive retailer said it will pay college tuition for workers who want to go back to school. According to Walmart, employees will only be asked to contribute $1 per day to their education.

There are a few caveats, though. Employees who choose to participate in the educational program must pursue degrees in either business or supply chain management. They also will only be able to choose from three schools: University of Florida, Brandman University and Bellevue University.

“Investing in the personal and professional success of our associates is vital to Walmart’s future success,” said Greg Foran, chief executive of Walmart US, in a statement. “We know training and learning opportunities empower associates to deliver for customers while growing and advancing in their careers.”

The company is partnering with Guild Education, a firm that helps employers offer education as a benefit, on the program. Walmart says employees will receive support from a Guild Education coach on everything from the application and enrollment process to selecting the appropriate degree.

The college program comes just months after Walmart raised its starting wage rate for hourly employees in the US to $11. The Arkansas-based retailer employs 1.5 million in the US.
