British MPs snubbed by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, who politely declined to answer their questions on the improper use of personal data, are having to resort to requesting that their Brussels counterparts perform the questioning for them with a live stream session having been organised for today (22 May.)

British MPs want answers as Mark Zuckerberg visits Brussels

Zuckerberg was ordered to volunteer evidence in the Cambridge Analytica case under pain of a formal summons the next time he enters the UK but opted to send chief technology officer Mike Schroepfer instead – whose responses were said to have been inadequate.

Since then, Zuckerberg has confirmed he will be jetting to Brussels for a tete-a-tete with Europe’s elite, prior to meeting French president Emmanuel Macron in Paris as well as Publicis chairman Maurice Levy. However, he has still declined to submit to questions from British politicians – either in person or via video link.

Damian Collins, chair of the British parliament’s media committee, made clear he still favours a direct grilling but is prepared to concede questioning by Brussels. He said: “… if Mark Zuckerberg chooses not to address our questions directly, we are asking colleagues at the European Parliament to help us get answers - particularly on who knew what at the company, and when, about the data breach and the non-transparent use of political adverts which continue to undermine our democracy.”

Announcing the appearance Antonio Tajani, president of the European Parliament, said he had ‘personally discussed’ live streaming the encounter which will be broadcast today at 16:15pm and available to view via the European Parliament's website.
