Nifty editing has allowed Adam&Eve/DDB to transport a Halifax mortgage advisor right into the emerald action of The Wizard of Oz.

'The Wizard of Halifax’ is the latest in the bank’s series featuring beloved childhood characters and settings. It sees branch employee ‘Greg’ join Dorothy, Toto, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion on the 1939 set of the Emerald City, in the land of Oz.

When the foursome knocks on the doors of the Great and Powerful Oz’s castle, the mortgage advisor informs them the wizard has popped out, but “if it’s the home of your dreams you’re after, maybe I can help.”

He invites them inside and, after deducing that Dorothy is too young to apply for a mortgage, educates her in getting home via her ruby slippers.

The modern-day scenes were filmed in a London studio and superimposed onto the original film footage in post-production. In a shift from its previous work with animated characters, the ad sees the Halifax brand enter another world, rather than characters from another world entering Halifax.

The likes of Top Cat, the Flintstones and Scooby Doo have all previously appeared in the bank’s advertising.

“What better place to showcase Halifax’s expertise and heritage in helping the nation’s homebuyers than the Emerald City,” said Catherine Kehoe, Halifax’s managing director for brands and marketing. "The twist this time is that our friendly colleague Greg ‘appears’ alongside Dorothy and her friends in the land of Oz, demonstrating how we give extra to our customers every day.”
