Hidden Figures screenwriter Allison Schroeder on what makes great storytelling in The Drum's new series 'What's the Story?'

What’s the Story? is a storytelling video series dedicated to learning what truly makes a great story, told through the lens of the world’s talent and practitioners of the craft in entertainment, marketing and beyond.

This week’s storyteller is Allison Schroeder, Academy Award-nominated screenwriter of Hidden Figures.

The fact is, Schroeder and Nasa will always be linked. Not only did the writer and producer’s grandparents work there, she interned there in high school, which later gave her the background and inspiration she needed to write the screenplay for Hidden Figures, the award-winning film about three female African-American Nasa mathematicians.

That screenplay earned her that Oscars nomination and vaulted her into the stratosphere of screenwriters.

The Drum caught up with Schroeder at SXSW earlier this year after her chat with Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Cheryl Boone Isaacs and asked her what makes a great story.

Simply put, great stories start simply are the ones that need to be told — and are driven by great characters. She also gives us some insight to why Hidden Figures is such a great story, shares that The Goonies was an early inspiration and is excited about what story will strike her next — the one that is just dying to be told.

What's the Story is sponsored by Branded Entertainment Network (BEN), the first global network for branded product integration in the entertainment industry, across all media, including the influencer space.
