Donald Trump’s win in yesterday’s (8 November) presidential election came as a shock to many, not least the media, which around the globe was not afraid to declare its surprise at the result through the front pages.

While the heritage broadsheets Washington Post and New York Times both ran with the cover headline ‘Trump triumphs’, others reflected a global aura of disbelief.

Canadian tabloid Le Journal de Montréal exclaimed ‘Oh My God!’, while Sydney’s Daily Telegraph went with ‘WTF’ (an acronym – apparently - of ‘Will Trump Flourish…or fail’). Many publications, such as USA Today and The Wall Street Journal, simply led their stories with the formerly unbelievable title of ‘President Trump’.

German daily Märkische Allgemeine was applauded on social media for printing a siamese twin-style paper, which was lined up with headline stories of both candidates’ victory depending on which way round it is read.

Free women’s magazine Stylist in the UK followed suit, putting Hillary Clinton on the outer cover subtitled ‘Phew* (*delete as appropriate)’ and Trump on a second hidden cover subtitled ‘Sh?t* (*delete as appropriate).

Not many would have guessed the order should have been the other way around.
