Disney is at it again with the teasers. Employing the same marketing strategy it used for The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm has now unveiled the second trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, teasing the return of Star Wars villain Darth Vader.

Debuting during the Olympics during NBC's primetime Rio 2016 coverage, the two-minute long ad follows on from the teaser trailer released earlier this year.

It divulges a little more information about the mission faced by the movie's lead character, Jyn Erso, who is portrayed by British actress Felicity Jones. The spot shows how Erso will join the Rebel Alliance in trying to steal the plans for the Death Star, which by the look of things obviously isn't going to be an easy task.

If you watch right until the end, there's also a sneaky appearance from fan favourite Darth Vader, who will be voiced by James Earl Jones, the original actor who played the antihero. The film is set ahead of the events of the first Star Wars 1977 release.

The movie is directed by Gareth Edwards, and is part of Disney's Star Wars spinoff series, separate from JJ Abrams' rebooted franchise.

Rogue One hits cinemas in December this year, and if the ad's 2.5m views and counting are anything to go by, then it is likely to be a lucrative number for Disney in terms of box office sales and brand tie-ups.

The Force Awakens' sequel is debuting in 2017, and its predecessor became the fastest-ever film to reach $1bn in global ticket sales after its release.

Original Star Wars ad man Charles Lippincott spoke to The Drum last year about how George Lucas' original idea transformed the movie marketing landscape.
