News UK’s weekly journal Times Literary Supplement (TLS) has appointed Stig Abell as editor and publisher following the news that Sir Peter Stothard will be stepping down after 14 years.

Current editor Sir Peter Stothard will leave his role at the end of April but will stay on as a consultant.

Abell is currently serving as managing editor of The Sun and has been a regular contributor to The TLS, The Spectator and to Sky News.

Of his new role, Abell said: “The TLS has an impeccable heritage and a fine record of publishing provocative and thoughtful writing. I realise that I am stepping into the shoes of one of Britain’s great men of letters, Sir Peter Stothard. In doing so, I can only say I will do all I can to maintain the tradition, expand the reach and champion the brilliance of the TLS and all of the talented people who write for it.”

Prior to joining The Sun, Abell served as a partner at communications agency Pagefield and before that was director at the Press Complaints Commission.
