Not for the first time Google is set to go head to head with Facebook after the tech firm revealed that it was building a fully-fledged VR headset to compete against the recently released Oculus Rift.

Google Cardboard, VR

The search giant had previously dabbled in virtual reality with Cardboard VR, a back of a cereal packet contraption which could attach to compatible smartphone to offer an introductory VR experience – according to reports in the Financial Times.

Needless to say Google’s latest venture will be considerably higher spec with a moulded plastic helmet giving a more comfortable user experience together with built-in motion sensors and improved optics.

In tandem with its new hardware approach Google will also update its Android VR software, potentially allowing it to be embedded directly within the smartphone operating system rather than requiring a standalone app.

Such a device could make a public appearance as early as May ahead of a September launch.

The VR battlefield is becoming increasingly congested with pre-orders for the HTC Vive set to go live within weeks and Apple rumoured to be making a big move on the sector of its own.
