Cult TV classic from the 60s Lost in Space could be set for a reboot, with Netflix reportedly bagging the exclusive rights as accelerates efforts to bolster its original content lineup.

The family-friendly show was a sci-fi spin on the Swiss Family Robinson tale, following a family’s attempts at survival after a mission to colonise a distant planet is sabotaged. It represents a more light-hearted affair to the more adult-orientated programmes such as Marvel’s Daredevil and Narcos that have a proven a hit with audiences on Netlfix this year.

Deadline reports that the streaming service landed the show after a “competitive situation” involving “multiple bidders”. It goes on to claim that the reboot will be written by the Dracula Untold duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless and directed by The Descent's Neil Marshall.

Lost in Space only lasted three series following its debut in 1965 but has had a decent impact on pop culture. The ‘Danger, Will Robinson’ catchphrase from the series has been aped in other shows since, while it was also turned into a 90s feature film that had the unlikely pairing of Mat LeBlanc and Gary Oldman as its main stars

Should the rumours be true then a Lost in Space would help Netflix build out its family entertainment offering, an area it would hope is able to pull in new audiences in order to maintain its aggressive growth.
