Weekend telly watchers have been left frustrated after a technical glitch brought down the BBC’s flagship iPlayer service, leaving people unable to catch up on popular output such as the German Grand Prix and the Archers.

The service was brought offline by the problem for up to 24 hours from Saturday morning and into Sunday.

Even the BBC’s homepage, one of the UK's most popular sites, was not immune as it too went down, leaving browsers with an apologetic error message explaining that the page could not be displayed ‘due to technical problems’.

A BBC spokesperson commented: "We're aware of an issue which means some people can't access certain parts of BBC Online. We're working hard to fix this as soon as possible."

During this spell the BBC operated a pared down version of its homepage but this was insufficient to placate hordes of irritated viewers, who took to Twitter to vent their frustration.
