Apple is said to be close to signing up former White House press secretary Jay Carney, who held the post until just last month, as its incoming head of PR.

Carney would replace Katie Cotton, who stood down earlier this year, in the high-powered role which would see the successful applicant report to chief executive Tim Cook.

Prior to being appointed by the White House in 2011 Carney served as Miami bureau chief for Time Magazine and communications director for vice president Joe Biden.

The change at the top is said to stem from efforts by Cook to develop a ‘friendlier, more approachable’ head of communications amidst criticism of his predecessor for ignoring media requests.

Carney’s name isn’t only in the frame for Apple however, he has also cropped up in talk over a communications role at taxi app Uber – which made headlines recently during a bitter day of action by black cab drivers angry that the apps business model was harming their business.
