Google is putting its might firmly behind wearable technology with the launch of Android Wear, a new operating system for a new breed of gadgets.

Leading consumer electronics brands including HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung are partnering with Google on the venture, which will pair them up with chip makers and fashion brands to launch a series of watches later in the year.

The Android Wear interface will allow developers to work with the existing Android notification system to handle voice messages and is configurable to both square and round output screens.

Other features include voice recognition, live messaging and social media updates, fitness monitoring and as a remote control for other devices.
