Britain has been confirmed as one of the world’s leading online shopping hubs after fresh data published by the British Retail Consortium and Google showed a sharp rise in the number of international consumers seeking out British shops – led by the Russians.

Overseas consumers searching for British stores rose 23 per cent in the third quarter, up from 16 per cent in the previous six months.

A surge in Russian shoppers was particularly evident with their numbers swelling by 54 per cent; followed by Dutch searches (50 per cent) and South Korean (39 per cent).

This was couched somewhat by a 9 per cent decline in visitors from China.

British online retailers are being led by the likes of Asos and Tesco, both of which are enjoying rapid growth in international markets.

UK clothing brand searches rose 26 per cent year on year and department store searches edged up 25 per cent with total retail sales increasing by 12 per cent over the period.
