Tonight, Apple is said to be set to unveil the latest version of the iPhone 5 – thought to be called iPhone 5S – which is rumoured to include a number of new features.

Here are some of the rumours that are likely to be quashed or confirmed by tonight’s presentation.

Fingerprint recognition technology

This rumour has been around for some time, with Apple having filed some patents around the technology, with a sensor said to be included within the device’s home button on the front, acting instead of password security to ensure that only the owner can gain access. A thin, silver ring around the button on the handset, according to an apparently leaked image of the box that the phone will be shipped in, also indicates to new tech being placed there. Apple’s acquisition of AuthenTec, a specialist in fingerprint sensor hardware has also raised further speculation over its plans to integrate such security within its products.

The name – iPhone 5S

This too stems from the above 'leaked' packaging images that were run by a Chinese tech website. So the actual name could be anything at this stage.

A low cost iPhone 5 – iPhone 5C (possibly named iPhone Light)

A budget iPhone has been discussed for some time also, and while there doesn’t seem to be any solid indications as to just how much cheaper the secondary phone could be, with rumours that Amazon is planning on releasing its own smartphone and distributing it for free, Apple must be concerned about being priced out of the marketplace. A video of an apparent prototype has also appeared online.

Brightly colour iPhone casings

Another set of ‘leaked’ images onto the net ahead of tonight’s presentation showed a number of differently coloured phone casings for the iPhone, which seem to be plastic and could be related to the iPhone 5c if real.
