Amazon is set to give away its rumouered smartphone for free in exchange for users signing up and using its services, according to reports.

The Wall Street Journal has claimed that the online retail giant plans to give the phone to customers at no cost when the phone, discussed since 2011, is finally launched.

Earlier this year, further rumours that Amazon was looking to develop its own phone were sparked when it announced the appointment of Charlie Kindle, a former executive for Windows Phone, to head up a secret project.

If indeed the development of a phone is being planned, then its launch is still some way away; a hardware provider has yet to be contracted for example.

At the time of writing, Amazon had not commented on the speculation.
