Google has mapped out Venice by ditching its car and strapping the 360 degree cameras to the backs of staff members.

For six years, the water filled city has defied Google the opportunity to add it to Google Street View, which uses cars carrying a camera on top of its roof to photograph its surrounding before uploading to the internet, as the cars were not able to traverse the back alleys.

Now, by altering the cameras into a backpack device, the search engine’s staff have been able to travel freely through the city’s streets to photograph them.

Ironically the 33lb cameras have themselves become something of a tourist attraction in the tourist mecca with holidaymakers keen to snap themselves being photographed by the device. Previously Google has employed tricycles and even snow mobiles to capture some of the planets more out of the way locales.

The images are expected to be added in the coming weeks, while plans are also in place for the city to be photographed by gondola.
