The BBC has today announced plans to launch five new HD channels by early 2014.

It has been revealed that the five new channels will be high definition versions of BBC News, BBC Three, BBC Four, CBBC and CBeebies.

BBC's director general Tony Hall said: "BBC One HD and BBC Two HD have already proved to be highly valued by our audiences and I'm delighted that we're able to follow this with the launch of five new subscription-free BBC HD channels by early 2014.”

The BBC has said that the channels will be available through rooftop aerials via Freeview receivers, as well as through satellite and cable.
