Facebook acquires Microsoft patents in $550m deal

Facebook has agreed to pay $550m in cash to Microsoft for the patents its was recently sold by AOL.

The move follows a lawsuit filed by Yahoo, claiming the infringement of 10 patents by the social networking giant.

The deal with Microsoft will give Facebook 650 patent and patent applications, while also offering it the license to another 275 parents and applications owned by Microsoft. Facebook was beaten to the patents by Microsoft during the initial auction to acquire them from AOL.

This parent acquisition comes a month after Facebook bought 750 patents from International Business Corp.

In March, Facebook acquired 750 patents from International Business Machines Corp.
