Welsh language broadcaster S4C will retain its editorial and managerial independence under a deal reached with the BBC Trust guaranteeing broadly stable funding until 2017.

The BBC Trust will have oversight of licence fee funded spending by S4C - the majority of its funding - and the BBC trustee for Wales Elan Closs Stephens will become a member of the S4C authority.

The level of licence fee allocated by the Trust to S4C in the final two years of the current licence fee: £75.25m in 2015/16 and £74.5m in 2016/17.

BBC Wales director Rhodri Talfan Davies said in an email: “This new agreement allows us to begin a new chapter in the relationship between BBC Cymru Wales and S4C - and one that I am confident will place our audiences front and centre.”
