The BBC is embarking upon an initiative to take its popular iPlayer service from the bedroom to the living room with a TV minded redesign.

Launched today on the PlayStation 3 the system is intended to harmonise the inconsistent presentation of iPlayer by rolling out across the range of set top boxes and televisions which presently support it.

Included in the refresh are menus designed with remote control access in mind and improved search functionality by remembering users viewing history.

The initiative is intended to extend iPlayer’s success on computers and smartphones to the television market itself as the corporation seeks to rebrand the player from a niche to mainstream product.

Gideon Summerfield, iPlayer’s executive product manager, said: “It feels like TV, it's much easier to use and it’s more personal. This is designed from the ground up for televisions.”
