Data suggests Google’s search dominance being eroded by Microsoft
Google’s once unassailable lead at the head of internet search is looking to be tested according to new data published by Experian Hitwise.
It shows that in March Microsoft hit 30.01% of the US search market, split roughly evenly between Bing and the Bing powered Yahoo.
This came on the back of a 6% growth in market share for Bing and a 5% increase for Yahoo since February. These gains were made largely at the expense of Google which registered a 3% decrease over the same period to 66.69%.
More worryingly for Google its market share has dipped 10% since August 2010 when the search engine claimed 71.59% of the market.
Bing’s recent success is being attributed by Experian to a greater click through success from the Bing platforms, with around 80% of search queries leading the user to click on a result. The comparable figure for Google is only around 65%.
