BBC axes 650 World Service jobs
The BBC’s World Service is to axe 650 jobs, around a quarter of its 2,400 workforce, and close five international services in a bid to make £67m of savings, according to Broadcast.
Redundancies will be phased in over the next two years, with two thirds expected to exit within the first year.
Five countries will see their national channels disappear in the moves, namely Macedonia, Albania, Serbia, the Carribean and Portugese African services.
An official statement is expected to be released tomorrow.
Just yesterday it was revealed that up to 360 jobs were to be cut within the BBC’s online department.
