Apple boss Steve Jobs has announced that he is to take indefinite medical leave from the technology firm.

The highly influential CEO will remain involved with major strategic decisions but will cede day to day running of the firm to its chief operating officer, Tim Cook.

Jobs' health has been the topic of fevered speculation ever since he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2004. Despite having a tumour removed from his pancreas that year his health has continued to fluctuate.

In an email to staff Jobs made a heartfelt plea for his privacy to be respected: “I love Apple so much and hope to be back as soon as I can. In the meantime, my family and I would deeply appreciate respect for our privacy."

Jobs is credited with single handedly transforming the fortunes of Apple and his recovery will be closely monitored by fans and investors alike.
