A South African man has turned the Facebook NekNomination craze on its head by turning his nomination into a force for good rather than an excuse to get legless.

The online challenge, which sees Facebook users down a drink in one go before nominating a friend to do the same on camera, has been heavily criticised, and even blamed for a spate of deaths, despite its on-going popularity.

Nominated by his friend, Brent Lindeque decided to do something different.

Speaking to the camera, Lindeque reveals he’s going to show how “South Africans do it better”, and rather than downing copious amounts of alcohol he instead hands over a sandwich, a chocolate bar and a bottle of Coke to a homeless man as statistics about poverty in the country appear on the screen.

With over 180,000 views at the time of writing, the information along with the video reads: “I’ve decided to create something positive out of the random global phenomena of NekNominations. Downing a can of Castle Light is easy… imagine if we all harnessed the power of social media to make a real difference in peoples lives. #OnlyGoodThings”

In the video he nominates two of his friends to follow his lead.
