Designer Yves Behar and tech entrepreneur Jason Johnson have joined forces to release the August Smart Lock, which reimagines aspects of the traditional lock.

The smart lock is designed and installed to run alongside a smartphone app granting access to invited guests or visitors. Working with the users existing deadbolt, the homeowner can send a virtual key to guests allowing them to gain access to their home without the need of a physical key. The number of guests and how long the keys are active for is controlled via the app.

As the homeowner or guest arrives at the door August will automatically unlock without the need for keys and will then auto-lock behind them. Once installed with an existing deadbolt a Bluetooth LE connection with the users smartphone is used to lock and unlock the door and when a guest is scheduled to arrive the app can send a virtual key to open the door at a specific time, tailoring their access. When that window expires guests lose access privileges.

As well as being a home security system August is also a social platform via the app’s Guestbook function which allows users to share photos, stories and comments for the homeowner or other guests.

The app can also be used to send party invites.
