Chicken chain KFC is to break with its raison d’etre by trialing a new line of vegetarian alternatives to chicken in a bid to entice non-carnivores through its doors.

KFC reaches out to vegetarians with plant-based chicken alternative

Until now vegetarians have had to make do with salad, corn on the cob or beans but were left hankering for anything deep-fried. From next year however an all new and as yet unspecified menu will be aired in the UK for the first time.

A KFC spokesperson said: “We always look to respond to the latest changes in lifestyle and dining habits of our customers. That's why we're looking into vegetarian options. The development of the recipe is still in its very early stages and so the options we're exploring in our kitchen are still top secret.”

The menu refresh comes as KFC seeks to slash its calories per serving by 20% over the next seven years amidst growing awareness of the contribution to bulging waistlines in Britain.

In this vein KFC will offer a new range of low or zero calorie drinks as well as subliminally ‘nudge’ patrons into making healthier meal choices by encouraging behavioral change.

KFC previously experimented with a chicken-free menu in February when a logistics blunder led to a meat shortage across its restaurants.
