Marks & Spencer rolls out online food delivery service trial

The long-awaited launch is based from the retailer's Camden store which promises to make deliveries within two hours for customers resident within a three-mile radius – dropping to one hour for those who merely hanker after a select line of ready meals and pizzas.

Those in Reading will have to make do with a collection-only service with a two-hour turnaround time. Both schemes are currently closed to anyone who is not a member of the brands Sparks loyalty card scheme.

M&S has been investing heavily in its food offer amidst rising sales as shoppers warm to its premium offer and the convenience of picking up dinner on the way home from work, building up its range of product lines available to purchase online to 4,100.

Late to the home delivery party M&S is carving out an alternative path to its rivals by competing directly with the likes of Deliveroo, Just Eat and UberEats in the delivery of single meals rather than full shopping baskets.

M&S currently stocks just 7,000 mostly own brand products versus the 40,000 offered by industry leader Tesco. No delivery charge will be levied on orders which are being honoured by courier firm Gophr.

In a sign of the times UberEats has signed a partnership deal with McDonald's to offer a McDelivery service for people craving a BigMac.
