Snap, owner of the Snapchat messaging service, has countered a lawsuit brought by a former employee alleging that it had deliberately manipulated its user growth figures by dismissing the suit as a publicity stunt.

Anthony Pompliano is suing the business for lying about its user growth to investors but Snap is now fighting back, claiming that Pompliano’s court action violated his employment contract and is ‘all about the publicity’.

Pompliano was hired as a member of Snap’s growth team for a mere three weeks before being fired, prompting him to go to court alleging that his former employers had been ‘falsely representing’ key metrics to others.

Snap’s counter petition notes that Pompliano was subsequently hired by Brighten Labs before being fired there as well and launching yet another lawsuit. Snap wrote: “His allegations against Snap are false from top to bottom and right out of his allege-fraud-against-former-employers handbook."

Pompliano, a former Facebook product manager, was hired by Snapchat in September 2015 to lead its growth and engagement team.

Snap cites having 150m active daily members at present and is on the cusp of mounting an IPO.
