A simple game app asking players to guess which of two items gets ‘Googled’ the most is has reached the No. 1 slot of the Top Free Apps chart in Apple’s App Store.

Created by Code Computerlove, a digital experience studio in Manchester, the game has now been played more than 50 million times in more than 200 countries across the globe. Originally launched online, Code Computerlove released the game as an app last week.

The game asks players to guess whether certain terms are searched for more or less than each other, based on average monthly Google search volumes. The aim is to guess as many correctly in a row as possible.

For example, do you think ‘Brexit’ is searched for more or less often than ‘Beyonce’?

Gareth Evans, search and media manager at Code Computerlove, said: “The idea came on the back of our daily analysis of Google search trends; understanding what people are searching for is key when it comes to us creating content people actually want to see and consequently giving our clients a competitive edge. Some of the stats we discover really surprise us, and are a frequent topic of conversation in the office. Guessing whether some terms would be higher or lower than others became quite addictive among the team – and the game was born!

“Like with our client’s websites, we actually launched the game as an MVP (minimal viable product) so that we could continually test, learn and improve it as more people played the game, and add in features that make it more sharable. And now it’s taken off massively and we’re adding new words and user interaction design to it daily to make it even better.

“So far, the highest recorded score on the game is 113, however the average score is between eight and ten. Most people play it around 11 times.”

The highly addictive game has already been picked up by a who’s who of the world’s most popular YouTubers, including PewDiePie, JuegerGerman and Squeezie who have created vlogs about the game amassing millions of views.
