Mohu’s new environmentally friendly antenna: another reason to cut the cord

For many years, the cable industry has seen major changes and we’ve reported on those changes here at Found Remote. One of the major problems with cable TV is the medium through which it offers programming; the model forces consumers to pay expensive and ever-growing cable bills for many channels they never watch.

Part of the response is the rise of cord cutters, and this group is not only turning to pay models like Sling TV and Sony Vue but also digital antennas.

Mohu, one of the leading antenna makers, has introduced a new product, ReLeaf, an environmentally friendly antenna made from “discarded cable set-top boxes and post-consumer recycled paper.”

As Mohu CEO Mark Buff explained, the growth in antenna popularity has led to further innovation:

“With roughly 80 million homes in the U.S. subscribing to cable TV and the number of cord cutters consistently rising, the number of set-top boxes that will eventually be discarded are in the millions. We realized we could decrease some of that waste...to create a TV antenna that frees consumers from excessive cable waste.”

Cable waste is no small problem. In 2014, an astonishing 41.5 million tons of electronic waste was generated, according to a report released by the United Nations University. To put that in perspective, that amount is equal to 1.15 million 40 ton 18-wheel trucks, which would stretch from New York to Tokyo and back. All the trash is worth $52 billion, and only 16% of all items were recycled.

Mohu helps to solve that. Not only is the product itself environmentally friendly, but the packaging is as well, and Mohu works to source materials from areas close to its manufacturing facility in North Carolina. And there is likely more on the way. According to the company, ReLeaf is the first of many environmentally friendly products.

As Buff noted, “ReLeaf is the answer for consumers who are anti-cable, pro-environment, and pro-savings.” Seems like a no-brainer.
