Australian radio station 2DayFM has issued its broadcasters strict instructions not to report on the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's second child.

An email sent by Southern Cross Austereo's management and leaked to the press says "under no circumstances" should the royal birth be mentioned on air.

The move follows the station's DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian's prank call in December 2012 which resulted in the suicide of nurse Jacintha Saldana who revealed private information after being duped into thinking the hosts were the Queen and Prince Charles.

Greig resigned from the station after the incident and has since spoke publicly of the personal and professional torment her role in Saldana's death caused her.
