Short Rationale (optional): Everyone knows that gift-giving at Christmas is secretly a game of family one up-manship; there’s nothing worse than realising your sister has got mum a better present than you did.

The integrated campaign, created by adam&eveDDB broke on 10 November, includes a 90 second online film directed by Andy McLeod, showing a young woman opening presents from her nearest and dearest, each new present trumping the one that preceded it… a portrait painted by her sister is immediately bettered by a (waving) puppy from her parents, only to in turn be trumped by a unicorn from her boyfriend. Just when it seems the bar can’t be raised any higher, grandma delivers the present to eclipse all presents – a Mulberry Bayswater bag (in Hibiscus pink, of course).

The full three and a half minute spot – directed by Ringan Ledwidge – is a creative interpretation of this day.

ButterflyCannon: Hennessy Very Special 'Hennessy Very Special Gift Packs'

Agency: ButterflyCannon, London

Agency website: http://www.butterflycannon.com

Creative Director: Jon Davies

Published: October 2014

ButterflyCannon’s approach was to maintain the core of the redesign whilst embellishing it with a bit of sparkle, holly and stars mixed with the emblematic vines. The Hennessy bow was untied and the festivities released to float around the packs. The ribbons acting like party streamers entwining themselves onto the bold side panel logos.

All the sensory and luxury codes were kept to ensure the packs didn’t feel devalued by this more playful approach to the design.

“It was essential that we maintained the recognition of the packaging identity as it had only recently been launched however we also wanted to give the packaging a bit more exuberance and party attitude. The untying of the bow to release the holly and sparkles seemed like the perfect metaphor for this festive fun,” said Jon Davies, Creative Director at ButterflyCannon.

The design extends across the carton and two gifts packs, one containing glasses and the other a miniature bottle of Hennessy Black (US market only). The new packs are available globally as from October 2014.

Food, technology, fashion, beauty, accessories and cinema are all represented in a one-off model conceived by isobel creative director Rob Fletcher and created by the award-winning Aardman Animations.

A smart phone peeks out of a blue leather bag, a meccano-esque contraption drips brightly coloured nail varnishes onto revolving records, scarves ‘pour’ out of china teapots, shiny baubles scatter onto a raised umbrella, brightly coloured plastic ladles evoke the charm of a Ferris wheel. And then the camera pulls back to reveal the complete model, turning and twirling, snow falling - a cacophony of unlikely, delightful collisions.
