On Tuesday 15 April Google is opening up its Glass 'Explorer Programme' for one day only enabling US residents to purchase Google Glass for $1,500 (£894) ahead of their general release.

The limited amount of Glass devices will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from 6am on Tuesday for adults living in the US. Of the development the Glass team said: "We're excited to meet our new Explorers, and we can't wait to hear your thoughts abut Glass."

As of yet Google hasn't made Glass available outside the US, though a number of people have purchased the device from there and travelled and a few specific applications outside of the US have been granted, with The Drum getting hands-on experience with Glass at Somo's London office last summer.

The latest edition of Glass has been updated from the original single band across the face look to spectacle-style frames. The look of Glass is likely to continue to evolve thanks to a partnership with Ray-Ban and Oakley manufacturer Luxottica to make the device more stylish.

The move is the first time Google has made Glass available for general sale, with the first owners having to be referred by friends, part of group-based campaigns, or developers.

In 2013 a total of 8,000 individuals were sold the devices as part of the explorer programme.
