As Lizzie Yarnold took home TeamGB's first Gold of the Sochi Winter Olympics last night, tweets about the victory peaked at 6,280 per minutes, marking the highest spike of Games-related tweets on Friday and the fourth-highest spike of the Games so far.

Twitter recorded the peak of activity shortly after Yarnold's win in the Skeleton at 5:32pm, with the sports star garnering more than 55,000 mentions on Twitter in the last 24 hours.

Her win has also saw her Twitter followers increase eight-fold since the Games began, starting with around 2,5000 followers and increasing to more than 20,000. This growth is 106x her normal daily follower increase, according to Twitter statistics.

Following her win brands, fellow athletes and fans headed to the social platform to congratulate the star, with Adidas sending its obligatory #allin tweet celebrating 'YarGold'. The most re-tweeted mention came from the official Team GB account.

Jenny Jones' bronze medal win last weekend caused a similar spike in traffic and followers to her account.
