Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr is reported to have signed a deal to become the face of HTC smartphones.

The deal, which is believed to be worth $12m (£7.7m) will see Downey Jr appear in the brand's marketing campaigns.

Rather than appearing as one of his many alter-ego characters, which include Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes, the actor will appear as himself in campaign for the Taiwanese company and is rumoured to have been given full creative control over the ads.

HTC is expected to launch a scaled down 'mini' version of its flagship HTC One handset in the coming months, it's unclear whether or not Downey Jr will be involved in the promotion for that device.
