With all the problems the bidding for the West Coast Main Line received last year, Bigjigs Toys decided that its toy trains would provide a much better option than FirstGroup, and decided to tell the Department of Transport as much.

The letter stated that Bigjigs Rail would be an ideal service provider because it would be free for users; the track is not affected by weather; and there has never been an accident.

On Christmas Eve, a response was written by the Department of Transport, stating that there were some ‘bureaucratic hurdles’ that Bigjigs Rail would have to meet, including that wooden trains should be replaced by aluminium.

Whether a publicity stunt, or just someone filling their time on a quiet Christmas Eve, the back-and-forth of letters being unveiled on the internet is becoming more and more common: with the Lego customer service letter to Luka being a recent example.
